CONNECTING THE GLADES

​

​Our Community Resource Educators provided more than 2,400 uninsured and underserved residents in the Glades area with information on their health care and other service options, assisting in applying for the various health and human services available and assist them in applying for federal, state and county benefits such as 

 

Medicaid/Medicare, Food Stamps and health care. In this past year, over 1,920 community members were eligible and received services with our help.

 

COMMUNICATION RESOURCES

The Glades Initiative serves as a focal point of communication for health and human service providers.

 

More than 1,600 individuals subscribe to The Glades Updates, a weekly eblast, a compilation of available services, meetings, events and information throughout the community. 

 The Glades Area Resource Guide was distributed to over 520 individuals, and the digital version was downloaded over 800 times. Our Community Calendar is one of the most effective tools for keeping up with health and human service activities in the Glades Community.

FOOD SECURITY

 

We compile the Strategic Plan for Food Security in the Glades Area. Numerous community partners work collectively to address and develop and implement solutions to these issues.

 

Part of this plan includes implementation of the Cooking Matters Nutrition Education program targeted to low-income children and families. This 6 week course teaches how to prepare healthy meals on a limited budget.  Host sites serving the low income population apply to have the course offered to their clients. 

 

The Glades Initiative’s food program includes operating a food bank, distributing food to partner agencies for pantries and soup kitchens meeting our quality criteria. They provide food to an average of 5,000 individuals per month to members of our community.

MEDICAL INTERPRETER TRAINING

​The Language Access Program reduces the language and culture barriers for health and human services staff providing services to residents with limited English proficiency.
 

One of our most popular services in our Language Access Program is our Medical Interpreter Trainings.  We train bilingual health and human service workers where participants learn Participants learn consecutive Interpretation, specialized terminology - such as anatomy, physiology and medical terminology, common medical problems, code of ethics, multicultural 

 

 

awareness, and interpreter skill development. The training is recognized by the IMIA (International Medical Interpreters Association) and prepares participants for the national exams for certification.

We welcome tax deductible donations of non-perishable food items to our food bank such as canned beans, vegetables, pastas, and rice.  If you have perishable food items to donate, we can put you in contact with our sites that serve hot meals and/or have refrigerated storage.

BACKGROUND SCREENINGS

The Glades Initiative offers level II Livescan background fingerprint screening to health and human service agencies requiring them for employees and/or volunteers.  

 

The GI is not only offering low costs, but

saving providers and their employees the drive to the coast for screenings in the past.

 

Organizations that are members of the Glades Initiative, Inc. for an annual fee of $50,  receive reduced rates as well as other benefits.
